Common sense would say "The more defense turrets I have, the better I will be defended, regardless of there armor or atk pwr". That is only half true and this is why.

If you left all your old turrets up as well as your new ones, if someone was to attack you just once, and no follow up attacks until your base is fully back up to 100%, then yes it helps you. But this is rare...It is often to expensive to hit a base in 1 hit when you climb up in the later levels.

What happens is when you get attacked, your lowest defenses get destroyed while the high lvl ones dont take much dmg. The next attack though, your higher lvl defenses give up some of there armor to bring your lower lvl ones back up to even numbers. This will hurt you because your lower lvl turrets will literally bleed you out dry! Here is an example below:

Turret A has 10atk 10arm
Turret B has 20atk 20arm and 5 shield.

As you build any defense, they come in packs of 5, so we will have 5 turret A's and 5 turret B's. Your total defense is 150(5*10 for A + 5*20 for B = 150 armour). Now we get attacked by some pesky fighters with an attack of 4. They are unable to do any dmg to B due to its sheilding, but A is destroyed due to lack of sheilds. So the end of the first wave we are left with A at 0% and B at 100%, and a total defense of 66.6%(100/150 * 100 = percentage of defense armor left). At the start of the next wave the game takes the 66.6% and sets all defenses to run at 66.6% capacity! A become back online and B loses armor for A to come back. Again the same fighters attack and your left with only 66 armor left total, only 44% total defensive armor left. This will continue until B is bleed dry to feed A, which isnt long, 4 waves.

So, with this new info before us, we now know that once we get better turrets its best to remove the old ones before they kill us. So as soon as you get shielded turrets, dump the old ones!!! It is generally a good idea to only have your 2 best turrets on a base, all the old ones should be removed to make more room. The only time this doesnt hold true would be Photon Turrets. Once you have disrupters and defelection shields you may wish to remove your photons. They have a very low armor rating, and while they cannot be fighter raped, they dont hold up to well to Heavy cruisers or Heavy Bombers. But depending on your situation you may opt to leave them in regardless until Planetary Shields.

people are different..

i like to have disruptors,shields,rings some people keep ion turrets and have them up to 20..

some get rid of ruptors but having them means its fend off ft drops and they can stop a dread

Planetary Shield is a must..

keep your defences at 3 lvls but if you want to add in the ion to make it 4 thats your choice..

Did you read the guide?

Keeping Disrupters is OK, but Ion and other units is a bad idea.

The guide above explains why, and that is because if an experienced player attacks you in waves with weaker units and takes out your weaker turrets, when the next wave comes around the weaker turrets will leech life out of the stronger turrets to keep all the defenses at the same %

Using this method a skilled player can take out your defenses with weaker units.

However if an inexperienced player tries to 1 hit kill your base, then in that case having the weaker shields provides from advantage.

i agree with xan on this matter but yes crow P-RINGS/P-SHIELD is obligatory from the earliest time possible

3 lvls of defences..

Ruptors,P-shields,Rings and 1 dread make you unprofitable..

they want to be mad to hit you as they will make a loss..

people are different, the above is how i do things and have not being hit..

That's fine, and I agree with the. Disrupters are good since they provide a high level of shield.

I'm more opposing Ion turrets, because their shield is so low they act as a "pass-through" to hurt the armor of the shields...

well RUPTOR P-RING P-SHIELD is the best defense possible, preferably with 3 dreads with FTers. The best choice
